Emma Havens Young School Hosts “Reading with Heroes” at Barnes and Noble

BRICK – Mayor John Ducey joined 10 other  guest speakers at the Emma Havens Young “Reading with Heroes” event on Friday at the Brick Barnes and Noble.

The event, presented by the PTA,  included giveaways and prizes, as well as a cupcake decorating station.

Mayor Ducey, who read “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Suess, said “It’s so important that we read to our children as often as possible. This is one of the most effective ways to stimulate cognitive skills, while building motivation, memory and curiosity.”

Guest readers included Mayor Ducey, Brick Police Officer John Alexander, N.J. State Trooper Laura Faulkner, Nurse Colleen Straniero, Emma Havens Young Principal Patricia Lorusso, Laurelton Fire Company Station 23 Fireman Lenny Figula, Emma Havens Young Administrative Assistant Jackie Figula, 2nd Grade Teacher Jennine Tiedemann, 1st Grade Teacher Kristen McDermott, Physical Education Teacher Christopher Calabro, and Teacher Support Melissa Lacerda.

Each reader held a questionandanswer period and taught life lessons including how and when to stop, drop and roll, stranger danger, and obeying the law.

A percentage of the sales from Barnes and Noble merchandise and concessions  during the event will be donated to education and enrichment programs at Emma Havens Young Elementary School.
