BRICK – Mayor Ducey hosted the Mock Trial teams from Brick Memorial and Brick Township High School in the Municipal Complex Council Chambers on Monday for the annual “Mayor’s Cup” competition.
BTHS students, led by teacher Michael Fletcher, acted as the prosecutors and prosecution witnesses. Brick Memorial students, led by teacher Chuck Pazmino, acted as the defense attorneys and defense witnesses.
Guest judges Brick Councilwoman Marianna Pontoriero, Kelly Toner, and Peter Bronzino presided over the trial. Both teams presented their arguments in convincing fashion, but ultimately Brick Memorial won the Mayor’s Cup.
“It’s clear that our Brick Mock Trial students put countless hours of work into preparing their arguments and testimonies,” said Mayor Ducey. “I’m sure many will become future leaders and attorneys. They are truly making Brick Proud.”
Both schools also competed in the Ocean County Mock Trial Tournament last month. Brick Memorial defeated M.A.T.E.S. to become Ocean County Mock Trial Champions and moved on to the State Championship tournament.
The “Mock Trial Competition” is a New Jersey State Bar Foundation sponsored statewide competition. Every year the students are given a statewide mock trial case to prepare. Afterward, schools must develop their own prosecution and the defense for the case and present it in competition format against other teams.
